The Liverpool organ is an impressive beast--its more than 9,000 pipes makes it one of the world's largest--a true challenge for the BBC players and sound recordists alike. Careful microphone placement creates a balance, but at times also a sense of isolation, between organ and orchestra. The otherworldly, almost surreal acoustic suits Poulenc's eerie, arousing piece. Tracey's registrations work very well and conductor Tortelier does a fine job of creating flow and throughline, despite constantly having to wait several seconds for the forte outbursts to die away, so he can cue the quieter passages. Guilmant's undeservedly obscure work successfully integrates the organ into the enlarged chamber orchestration and features prominent solo passages for oboe and horn, as well as for the various string sections. Although Widor was an accomplished orchestrator, the symphonies for solo organ remain his best known: the "Toccata" movement of No. 5 aspires to the title "best known organ piece of all time". And here, left to their own devices, Ian Tracey and the Liverpool Cathedral organ verify Berlioz's famous outburst: "The orchestra is Emperor, but the Organ is Pope!" --Yngvil V.G.
