Amazon.co.uk Maria Kliegel continues her fruitful association with Naxos with this delightful recording of the complete Haydn cello concertos. (The academically dry but informative notes discuss the questionable authenticity of the "little" D-major concerto, Hob.VIIb:2 at some length, and conclude: "It would not be right to exclude a work so full of charm, feeling and spirit from the recording". And they're right.) She throws herself into these sunny works with verve and passion, and gives an astonishing display of virtuoso fireworks in the "great" D-major concerto. If occasionally she is a little over-emphatic, she avoids any temptation to bloodless refinement or sugary sentimentality, and the result is a series of performances of high energy and fun. She is sensitively accompanied by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, which, as the notes reveal, played on period instruments from 1976 to 1987, and now employs baroque performance practices on modern instruments.
