Amazon.co.uk Karl Amadeus Hartmann's career mirrors that of his native Germany: an internal exile during the Nazi era, he literally recreated his symphonic music in the post-war years. The Sixth Symphony, originating in the late-1930s, was completed in 1953, by which time the European avant-garde was well on its way to recreating Western music in its own image. Hartmann was no avant-gardist - there's nothing here that would sound out of place in Berg or Hindemith--yet his music is very "contemporary". The first movement's intensifying waves of sound; the Toccata's sequence of (seriously non-academic) fugues which threaten to spiral out of control--this is music seeking to nail down the spirit of its time in no uncertain terms. Judge for yourself in Metzmacher's exciting performance; suitably coupled with music by Webern and Berg (respectively Hartmann's teacher and primary influence)--whose work, always on the edge emotionally, did not have to confront the cultural identity-crisis that Hartmann does so powerfully in this symphony. --Richard Whitehouse
