Amazon.co.uk The Kodaly Quartet's Haydn series, civilised and humane, has been a central feature of the Naxos label's success. Now well advanced on a Beethoven cycle, they display much the same qualities in their music-making. There are some obvious highpoints here: the slow movement of the third Rasumovsky has the right air of veiled mystery, while the "Minuet" gets the balance between charm and calculation just right. The deeply moving "Adagio" of Op. 127 is beautifully paced, never dragging or heavy. Elsewhere, there's a lack of the elemental qualities that make these quartets the life-enhancing experiences they should be. The finale of the earlier quartet is incisive, but lacks the edge-of-seat excitement that Beethoven surely intended. Similarly, the "Scherzo" of Op. 127 is not nearly quixotic enough, its reckless playfulness streamlined and smoothed over, while the finale lacks the overwhelming sense of the music coming full circle, on a different, higher plane from where it started out. The Kodaly Quartet clearly admire this music, but don't always seem to live it as they should.
