Thomas Tallis became a vicar-choral at Canterbury Cathedral in 1540 soon after it was refounded as a secular cathedral in the wake of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. The music on this recording has recently been identified from manuscripts in Peterhouse, Cambridge as that written by Tallis for performance in the cathedral in Henry VIII's reign.
