The origins of the Squadronaires can be traced back to 1939, when a plan was put forward suggesting that experienced civilian musicians should be recruited into the Royal Air Force to form dance bands of 5 to 7 players. These bands would be posted to various RAF stations where they would be expected to carry out normal station duties during the day and entertain with concerts and dances in the evening, thus playing a vital part in maintaining morale during wartime.

The original ‘Squads’ had Tommy McQuater and Archie Craig on trumpets; George Chisholm and Eric Breeze on trombones; Tom Bradbury, Harry Lewis, Jimmy Durrant and Andy McDevitt were the Saxophone section; Ronnie Aldrich on piano, Sid Collin on guitar; Arthur Maden on bass and Jock Cummings on drums, with Jimmy Miller as vocalist, leader and occasional pianist.

Somebody Stole My Rose Coloured Glasses voc. Sam Browne
