Amazon.co.uk Pity the composer who dies just as his music is enjoying wider appreciation. Avet Terterian's death at a festival of his music ended the career of an original, and still developing creative figure. The symphonies on this disc give a good idea of just how original. Even more than his Georgian contemporary Giya Kancheli, Terterian's symphonies merge incident and atmosphere into one: ideas return, sometimes literally, but they never feel the same. The Third Symphony (1975) abounds in stark contrasts and dynamic extremes that are fascinating in themselves and yet, across three short movements, a sense of purpose does emerge. The single-movement No. 4 (1976) is a claustrophobic study in musical tension. A cheap analogy--this is what you'd hear if you were trapped in a lift on the 40th floor, wondering about the shaft beneath. Musically Terterian leaves nothing to chance and, in the persuasive hands of Tjeknavorian and his vividly recorded orchestra, its another disc that proves the symphony is alive and kicking--so long as the composer wants it to be. --Richard Whitehouse
